A FRAMEWORK FOR PROMOTING MENTAL WELLBEING, BRAIN HEALTH AND COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE

THE PRESENCE FRAMEWORK

PRESENCE is a practical, evidence-informed framework developed by Linda Rowley. It helps people understand the everyday lifestyle factors that support mood and memory, promoting mental wellbeing, brain health and healthy brain ageing.

Bringing together neuroscience, lifestyle medicine and positive psychology, PRESENCE translates research into ideas that are accessible, engaging and practical. At its heart, it is about bridging body and mind.

How we move, sleep, eat, think, connect, learn and recover all influence how we feel and function, at work and in life.

PRESENCE is not about perfection. It is not another complicated wellbeing program or a list of things people ‘should’ do. Instead, it offers a simple framework for making small, meaningful and sustainable choices that support wellbeing today while investing in long-term mental wellbeing and brain health.

THE CASE FOR PRESENCE
  • Modern life places increasing demands on our brains.

  • We are constantly thinking, deciding, adapting, communicating and solving problems.

  • Stress, digital overload, fatigue, disrupted sleep and competing responsibilities can all affect how we think, feel and function.

  • The brain supports everything else we do, yet its wellbeing is often overlooked.

  • Research shows that many factors influencing mental wellbeing and brain health are modifiable.

  • While we cannot control everything, we can influence the habits, routines and environments that support us.

THE PRESENCE FRAMEWORK

PRESENCE brings together eight interconnected, neuroscience-informed lifestyle elements:

  • Protect your head

  • Reduce risks

  • Exercise

  • Sleep well

  • Eat nutritiously

  • Nurture your mind

  • Connect with others

  • Engage your intellect

Together, these elements support mental wellbeing, healthy brain function and may promote cognitive reserve, the brain’s capacity to adapt and continue functioning in the face of ageing, illness, injury and life’s challenges.

The strength of PRESENCE is that it is multimodal. Rather than focusing on one habit in isolation, it recognises that healthy behaviours work together: sleep influences mood; movement supports cognition; nutrition affects energy; connection strengthens resilience; mindfulness supports emotional regulation; and learning contributes to cognitive reserve.

Everything is connected.

THE EIGHT ELEMENTS OF THE PRESENCE FRAMEWORK

Protect Your Head

Protect the brain that does the work

Protecting brain health begins with reducing avoidable harm. This includes practical steps to prevent head injury, such as using helmets, seatbelts and safe work practices. It also means noticing everyday conditions that affect attention and safety, including fatigue, rushing, distraction, falls, digital overload and unsafe ways of working. PRESENCE invites us to consider how we can protect the brain we rely on, at work, at home and throughout life.

Exercise

Move in ways that support your body, brain and mood.

Physical activity may lift mood, support sleep, reduce cardiovascular risks and improve blood flow to the brain. It also supports processes involved in learning, memory and the brain’s capacity to adapt. Exercise does not need to be complicated or athletic: walking, gardening, dancing, swimming, cycling, yoga, active housework and taking the stairs all count. PRESENCE encourages us to move more, sit less and choose movement that is enjoyable, realistic and sustainable.

Eat Nutritiously

Nourish the brain and body.

What we eat may influence mood, energy, inflammation, vascular health, blood glucose regulation, gut health and the brain’s ability to function and adapt. PRESENCE draws attention to Mediterranean and MIND-style eating patterns, rich in vegetables, leafy greens, berries, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, olive oil and fish or seafood where appropriate. The emphasis is not on dieting, guilt or restriction. It is on realistic, inclusive ways to nourish the brain and body.

Connect with Others

Connection helps us feel seen, valued and supported.

Meaningful relationships may support mental wellbeing, resilience, belonging and healthy ageing. Loneliness and social isolation can affect mental and physical health, while positive connection can buffer stress and create opportunities for support, learning, laughter and meaning. PRESENCE© encourages small moments that matter: a thoughtful conversation, a walk with a friend, a kind act, an appreciative message or a community activity.

Reduce Risks

Small changes can reduce preventable risks to brain health.

Brain health is shaped by many influences across the lifespan. Although some are outside our control, others can be addressed through timely support, regular health checks and everyday choices. This element includes reducing risks associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, excessive alcohol use, untreated hearing or vision changes, and mental health concerns. Early action, self-compassion and realistic steps can support long-term wellbeing.

Sleep Well

Sleep is active brain care.

Quality sleep supports learning, memory, emotional regulation and physical recovery. During sleep, the brain consolidates learning and carries out important restorative processes. Poor or disrupted sleep can affect mood, concentration and decision-making as well as longer-term health. Most adults need around seven to nine hours, although individual needs vary. PRESENCE reframes sleep as an essential part of recovery, resilience and healthy functioning, not a luxury.

Nurture Your Mind

Create space to pause, notice and restore.

Mindfulness can help us step out of autopilot, regulate stress and bring our attention back to the present. Nature can also offer powerful restoration: time outdoors, green walking, natural light, or simply noticing the trees or water, may help settle the nervous system and replenish attention. PRESENCE includes accessible practices such as mindful breathing, grounding, and restorative pauses that can become part of everyday life and work.

Engage Your Intellect

Stay curious and keep investing in the brain you will rely on tomorrow.

Our brains can adapt and change throughout life. Learning, creating, remembering, reflecting and solving problems all engage the brain. Cognitive stimulation might include reading, music, puzzles, writing, discussion, learning a skill, mentoring, creative projects, reminiscing, singing, dancing or exploring new ideas. This is not only about reducing cognitive decline; it is also about curiosity, confidence, purpose and staying actively engaged with life.

Positive Psychology: Bridging knowledge and action

Most people already know that sleep, movement, nutrition and connection matter. The challenge is often turning that knowledge into action, and sustaining it when life is busy, stressful or unpredictable.

This is where positive psychology becomes an important partner to PRESENCE. Practical approaches such as gratitude, mindfulness, self-compassion, character strengths, kindness, hope and savouring can build motivation, meaning and confidence. They can also make healthy behaviours feel more achievable and personally meaningful.

  • Gratitude can gently shift attention away from worry and rumination at bedtime.

  • Mindfulness can help us notice stress, hunger, fullness, distraction and emotional triggers.

  • Self-compassion can help us respond to setbacks without shame or giving up.

  • Acts of kindness can strengthen social connection and belonging.

  • Character strengths can help us take action in ways that feel authentic and energising.

PRESENCE: FOR LEADERS

Creating brain-friendly, psychologically safe workplaces

PRESENCE for Leaders helps managers, supervisors and decision-makers understand how workplace conditions influence psychological safety, mental wellbeing, brain health and sustainable performance.

Psychological safety is shaped not only by what leaders say, but by how work is designed, how teams operate and how leaders respond when people speak up, ask for help, share ideas or make mistakes.

A different leadership lens

From: What should individuals do differently?

To: What conditions can we create to help people feel safe to contribute, learn, work, care and lead sustainably?

Using the PRESENCE framework, leaders explore how everyday workplace conditions can support clearer thinking, better stress regulation, stronger connection and more open participation.

Practical leadership actions may include:

  • Identifying and reducing unnecessary or excessive job demands

  • Creating clear roles, priorities and expectations

  • Supporting recovery, flexibility and healthy boundaries

  • Improving meeting culture so different perspectives can be heard

  • Responding constructively when people raise concerns, ask for help or make mistakes

  • Encouraging movement, restorative breaks and time in nature

  • Protecting focus time and reducing avoidable interruptions

  • Strengthening connection, inclusion and belonging

  • Making it safe to discuss workload, fatigue and mental health

  • Supporting curiosity, learning and professional development

  • Recognising effort, contribution and individual strengths

  • Involving people in decisions that affect their work

  • Modelling healthy, respectful and sustainable work practices

Turning insight into action

The PRESENCE framework gives leaders a practical way to look at both individual wellbeing and the conditions around it.

The Leader Reflection Tool and Manager Action Menu help leaders identify what is already working, where safer and healthier practices could be strengthened, and which changes are within their influence.

Why leadership matters

Leaders help create the conditions that make healthy, safe and sustainable ways of working easier or harder.

A workplace can:

  • Encourage recovery or reward constant availability

  • Protect focus or create continual interruption

  • Invite questions and ideas or make people afraid to get things wrong

  • Respond constructively to concerns or teach people to stay silent

  • Strengthen connection and belonging or leave people feeling isolated

  • Support learning and growth or keep people operating in survival mode

Bring presence to your leaders

PRESENCE for Leaders helps organisations move beyond one-off wellbeing initiatives and create healthier, safer and more sustainable ways of working. Sessions offer a practical focus on challenges such as stress, fatigue, change, caring demands and digital overload.

Sessions can be tailored to your organisation, sector and goals, and delivered as a focused leadership session or tailored as part of a broader wellbeing and psychosocial safety program.

The aim is simple: help leaders identify meaningful actions they can influence now, while supporting long-term wellbeing and brain health.
